Mixto Festival celebrates a truly intercultural city.

It brings together communities, cultures and contemporary experiences in a uniquely celebratory format that avoids presenting “world music” as a static or exotic experience. Instead, cultural diversity is treated as an intuitive and integral part of the city’s multicultural fabric.

Mixto Festival takes place yearly, celebrating the local and international character and diversity of Toronto. The word “mixto” or “misto” in both Portuguese and Spanish means “mixed”, but can also refer to a sandwich with many different toppings, or elements. The double meaning here is of “mix”, and “TO”,  as in the shorthand for Toronto.

So Mixto is the representation of all the elements of diversity in our city, and our community of artists and revellers. A delicious combination of ingredients, a feast for the whole community that showcases different music scenes in Toronto.

HISTORY

Mixto Festival is produced by Uma Nota Culture. Founded in 2007 as a monthly event series, UNC hosts concerts, festivals, block parties, film screenings, panel discussions, and workshops.

The first Mixto Block Party was held in Toronto in July 2019. Scaled up from similar events dating to 2012 that were co-produced with Maracatu Mar Aberto, the festival is an afternoon and night of performances by bands and DJs, children’s activities, art installations, food and drink, in a transformed, urban, outdoor location, featuring diverse performances by local and international DJs and live acts.
